LEADERSHIP

The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word "Elder."  In a Presbyterian church, leaders are chosen by the congregation, and these leaders share the responsibility of measuring the progress of the ministry, or carrying out the vision of Jesus. This Elder-based leadership is foundational to the Presbyterian church.

What are Elders?

Elders are active members of CPPC who supervise the whole life of the church, spiritual and corporate. Called by God, equipped by his Spirit and elected by the congregation, they provide oversight of the congregation by teaching, leading, protecting, and exercising discipline in the church.  They serve a three-year term.

Scripture that outlines the role of an Elder:

  • Teaching both publicly (1Tim 3:2) and privately (Acts 20:20)

  • Governing, or ‘ruling’, over the affairs of the church (Numbers 11:16-30)

  • Caring for the needs of the individual members of the church (Acts 20:281Tim 5:1-16).  This includes both pastoral care and church discipline.

  • Guarding the church against false doctrine, false teachers, conflict, immorality and error.         (Acts 20:29-311Tim 1:3-72Tim 3:3-4Titus 1:10-14)

  • Participating in the life and ministry of the Presbytery and General Assembly (Acts 15)

What are Deacons?

God calls us all to love each other, and this primarily happens within our Life Fellowship Groups.

The office of Deacon is primarily about compassion and serving the needs of others.  The role of a Deacon is laid out in Acts 6.  As the early church grows, the Elders threatened to become overwhelmed by the daily needs of the believers; thus Deacons were appointed to serve these pressing needs.  Deacons are especially concerned with matters of welfare, visitation, and preparation of communion elements.  They serve those in our congregation who are in crisis or facing challenging circumstances.  This is done by building loving relationships where hearts are being changed through encounters with Jesus and one another. Our primary goal is to extend God’s mercy by offering prayer and practical assistance for those who need help. Sometimes this means delivering meals or giving someone a ride. At other times, it means helping with a more serious issue such as financial devastation. In all cases, we want to be sensitive to hurts and needs and to extend Christ’s compassion. Deacons are elected by the congregation and serve a three-year term.

Responsibilities of a Deacon:

  • Caring for the needs of members in joy and in sorrow – providing meals, visitation, etc…

  • Overseeing church finances and organizing the church budget

  • Maintaining and repairing the church building and grounds that the worship of God might continue without interruption.

Qualification of Deacons are found in 1 Timothy 3
