What are Deacons?

God calls us all to love each other, and this primarily happens within our Life Fellowship Groups.

The office of Deacon is primarily about compassion and serving the needs of others.  The role of a Deacon is laid out in Acts 6.  As the early church grows, the Elders threatened to become overwhelmed by the daily needs of the believers; thus Deacons were appointed to serve these pressing needs.  Deacons are especially concerned with matters of welfare, visitation, and preparation of communion elements.  They serve those in our congregation who are in crisis or facing challenging circumstances.  This is done by building loving relationships where hearts are being changed through encounters with Jesus and one another. Our primary goal is to extend God’s mercy by offering prayer and practical assistance for those who need help. Sometimes this means delivering meals or giving someone a ride. At other times, it means helping with a more serious issue such as financial devastation. In all cases, we want to be sensitive to hurts and needs and to extend Christ’s compassion. Deacons are elected by the congregation and serve a three-year term.

Responsibilities of a Deacon:

• Caring for the needs of members in joy and in sorrow – providing meals, visitation, etc…

• Overseeing church finances and organizing the church budget

• Maintaining and repairing the church building and grounds that the worship of God might continue without interruption.
